Connecting the Dots

Today, I began “project number 3” of my practicum. The assignment is to connect the Neiman Marcus Scrapbook images digitized by Hannah Tarver in UNT Special Collections to the garments in the TFC. After reviewing the Metadata Guidebook and its definitions, I chose to add the TFC garment information to the “Relation” section of the metadata. I created a second qualifier below the first one listed. I would go to the list of items in the Neiman’s scrapbook that Ailie and I had identified as part of the TFC collection. I would then search for that object or garment in the TFC Museum Plus and look for it in the TFC Collection pages. After I located the object's ark number and ID number, I added that information under the new Relation field I created in the metadata file. That information looked like the below image.

Secondly, I would take the ark number for the image in the Digital Library and the ark number for the scrapbook page and cross-reference that information in the TFC Museum Plus metadata under the “Notes” section. That information looked like the image below.

NM Scrapbook; 2 hrs.

The process started slowly as I navigated the UNT Metadata site, TFC metadata site, and the fashion collection site, cross-referencing and reviewing all of the data and objects. I completed the first 10 and sent my work to Ailie to ensure I met the goal. I feel I am off to a good start!

This week was pretty hectic at my job, so I did not complete many metadata edits. I met with Ailie for my weekly check-in to review the work I had done so far with the scrapbook cross-referencing. She had sent a reply to my email earlier in the week and mentioned how pleased she was with the cross-referencing! In our Zoom conversation, we discussed adding a detailed description of the garment shown in the photo. We navigated together through the metadata sight to see where we could add the information and determined we could add it to the “Object Description.” There was already data that described the type of object and very general information. We reviewed the standards of what we could add in that field and confirmed we could describe the photo's context in more detail. We also “unhid” one of the object's metadata to see what it would look like once published. And there it was, all the great information and links!

This evening, I went back through the one I had worked on and added garment details as found in the TFC metadata so that it would be consistent. I plowed through many more this evening. I had three windows and links open in which I gathered my information: the UNT Metadata link, the TFC metadata link, and the TFC Collections page. I got about 20 more done this evening!

Tonight, I surpassed the requisite 50 items! I completed the first volume of the Neiman Marcus scrapbook out of four volumes and started on the second volume. Each photographed item in the scrapbook represented in the TFC Collection now has a garment description as written in the TFC metadata and the Relation information. I also decided to add a comment in the "Notes" section field with the designation “Non-viewing” so it does not appear to the public. To leave a “paper trail” of who and what was added to the metadata after Hannah initiated the original information, I wrote that I added the additional object description, accession number, and ark number and dated it. It was definitely another productive weekend!

We have officially gotten to the halfway point of the semester. It is flying by!
