Weekly Check-In

6.13.24

.75  hrs.

I was happy to learn that Ailie was impressed with my work, especially the template I created for other students to use, as well as my suggestions for enhancing the finding aids. She appreciated the additional DACS and is considering incorporating some of my ideas, as she liked the way they read. Additionally, she has already shared my finding aid template with another student for their use! I have started working on the second of two finding aids for my practicum and will complete Page Boy Maternity this weekend.

During our check-in, we discussed the next item on my agenda. I will be using the training I received from Hannah Trevor on the UNT Digital Metadata system to set standards and update records for pages of Neiman Marcus scrapbooks. My goal is to complete at least 50 records. There was a lot of ground covered during the training, and I am a hands-on learner, so I am sure I will have additional questions or be clicking on that "Help" key to understand how the system works.

Next week, during our check-in, I will have the chance to visit the TFC on campus. I am looking forward to meeting Ailie, seeing Annette again, and having some face-to-face human interaction! We will get an opportunity to discuss my progress so far and perhaps review some of the items for which I am creating metadata.

I continued researching materials for Page Boy Maternity. I also researched the three sisters who started the brand to create their biographical and historical information for the finding aid. Similarly to the way I did with the Michael Faircloth information, I created lists by documenting all the collection creation dates, acquisition dates, and scope of objects in the collection, as well as a list of donors and any subject terms. Since the collection was much older than Michael Faircloth’s collection, there were more circa-date periods than exact creation dates. I particularly loved seeing a dress that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis wore during her second pregnancy and wore on the Dave Garroway Today Show.

One of the things I noticed today by accident was that when I did a search in the program for “Page Boy Maternity,” it provided a list of 60 objects. However, just on a whim, I removed the word “maternity” and discovered there were seven additional related items under the search “Page Boy”. These items were acquired as a gift early on in 1968 by Elsie Frankfurt herself. These items were designed by Elsie but were not maternity outfits, nor did they have the Page Boy Maternity label on the garment. I am not sure if they should be its own separate finding aid or part of the same collection. I did include it as “related items”. The Page Boy Finding Aid is now complete. One small detail I left out was to ask Ailie which option she wanted this one in. I completed both options anyway for her to choose from. The document is attached below as PDF.

This completes assignment number two. On to assignment number three; Neiman Marcus Scrapbooks.
