I completed the first assignment, which involved collecting at least eight collection management policy examples from various institutions. I tried to find policies from smaller institutions or repositories, but either they did not have them or did not publish them on their websites. I emailed a couple of small museums in Fort Worth, but as of May 24th, I have not received a response.

During my search, I came across the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), which provided 18 elements that institutions could consider including in their collection policy. Each repository and its board or members must decide what makes the most sense for their institutions and add the most needed and appropriate elements, as there is no right or wrong way for archives and museums.

I found and reviewed nine policies from various public and private organizations. These policies varied from as little as three elements to as many as fourteen elements. Some policies were short and posted on one page online, while others provided links to robust PDF documents.

After reviewing and comparing the nine policies, I discovered that each policy is unique, as recommended by the AAM. While many policies provided extensive information on collection size and preservation, they consistently covered accession and decision-making processes, which is crucial in helping potential donors understand what materials institutions can or are willing to accept. It also empowers archivists and repositories to refer to the policy when necessary.
